On 17th July the Catholic Church commemorates the death of the "martyrs of Compiègne", sixteen courageous Carmelite nuns who were executed by the Revolutionary Government in 1794.

At the request of the bishops of France and the Order of Carmelites Discalced (OCD), Pope Francis agreed on Feb. 22 to open a special process known in the Catholic Church as “equipollent canonization” to raise to sainthood the martyrs of Compiègne (who were beatified in 1906).
