This charming portrait depicts a small poodle, known as "Pompon", one of Marie-Antoinette's favorite dogs. The animal is placed on a table, alongside an inkwell, a quill pen and a folded sheet of paper bearing handwritten inscriptions.
Delamarre, who specialized in depicting this small dog, is said to have painted several versions of this canine portrait, each with slight variations, notably in the dog's size, grooming and accompanying objects.
The dog depicted here has often been described as a poodle, although some have suggested other breeds.
Although little is known about this artist, a few other works by him are on record, and we know that he was admitted to the Académie de Saint-Luc in Paris in 1777.
This composition is reminiscent of a famous work sold at Sotheby's (New York) in May 2023. No. 725, sold for €205,244
