Robespierre letter (update)

On 11th April the French Minister of Culture issued a statement defending the State's decision not to preempt the iconic letter from Robespierre to Danton, which was auctioned by Osenat in Versailles on 12th March 1793.

According to the statement the letter is not perceived to "possess enough unique historical importance to justify the expense" - this despite protests from leading scholars and public figures. The letter, which fetched final hammer price of  €218,750 will now be retained by a private collector.
