New Tom Paine museum in Thetford

The Tom Paine hotel in Thetford unveils ambitious plans for a new £70,000 museum dedicated to the town's most famous son.

 (If I remember rightly, the youthful Paine briefly trained as a stays-maker in Thetford but couldn't get away fast enough.....)

Meanwhile, I  recommend a visit to Lewes where an equally miserable bout as an Exciseman finally drove Tom Paine to sharpen his pen.   In Lewes you can see the Bull House where he once lived, and acquire hand-printed cards and posters from the Tom Paine Printing Press and Gallery (above).
