A new drawing of Robespierre

 Among the most noteworthy lots items from the collection of  Doctor André Bernheim, auctioned by Giquello et associés on 21st January,  is this remarkable drawing of Robespierre, signed by the pupil of David, Claude Gautherot (Paris, 1769-1825).

The various paintings and engravings of Robespierre in his striped coat are discussed by Marianne Gilchrist in her article of 28.06.2022 on the ARBR website.

Marianne considers that the current drawing probably antedates most of the other Robespierre portraits of this type, including the famous painting in the Carnavalet.   It might even feasibly be an sketch from life made in the 1790s.
