J.-C.-M. questions the idea that the Vendeans were the unique bearers of "a popular and traditional vision of the French nation".  The risings of March 1793 involved rural populations in a quarter of France, but only in the Vendée did the military ineptitude of the Republican forces allowed resistance to take hold.  The "war in the Vendée" was a political construct, born out of the rivalries within the Convention. The rebels were never completely united, so that Charette cannot simply be taken to embody the values of opposition of the Revolution.  J.-C.-M. comments that it is time to move a way from a simplistic Manichean vision.  We might instead ask how the Revolution came to fail the common people, both the peasants and the urban poor who, after March 1794, were excluded from political life.
