A restored director's cut of Christophe Gans' 2001 fantasy film Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le pacte des loups) is released on Blue-ray and DVD from May 15th and on AppleTV+.
The film is (very loosely) based on the story of the "Beast of Gévaudan", which spread terror in south-central France between 1764 and 1767 - reputedly killing over 100 people.
I have seen this film, though I don't remember much about it.
The principal study of the Beast is Jay M. Smith's Monsters of the Gévaudan: The Making of a Beast. Harvard University Press (2011). Reviewed by Robert Darnton: The Wolf Man's Revenge | Robert Darnton | The New York Review of Books (nybooks.com).
