A new book by Michel Biard, entitled Les Derniers Jours de la Montagne (1794-1795), is published by on 13th September.
The book discusses how the remaining deputies of the Mountain, stigmatized under the nickname of "Crêtois", tried to resist the new political orientations of the Thermidorians. They were quickly transformed into targets; three quarters of their number were excluded from the National Convention during successive political purges.
Imprisoned, executed or driven to suicide, forced into flight, the last Montagnards paid a high price for their loyalty to the democratic and egalitarian ideals of Year II. Apart from the six “martyrs of Prairial” permanently inscribed in militant memory and in historiography, their memory has faded; however, they can be seen as the first diehards of the Left in France.
