Peter Mcphee on the Statue of Liberty

Australia's ABC Radio series Night Life has already featured Peter McPhee talking about the Eiffel Tower.  Now here he is on the Statue of Liberty (Broadcast on Sunday 30th July)

The statue of Liberty is an iconic symbol, seen to represent everything that The United States stands for.

But the origins of the statue are quite different from its eventual use. It was first conceived as a female Muslim peasant, meant to stand at the northern end of the Suez Canal.

Suzanne Hill spoke with Peter McPhee, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Melbourne and Author of 'A Social History of France 1780-1880'.
