French historians react to Ridley Scott

According to an article published in Variety on 6th December, French pundits aren't that impressed with Ridley Scott's Napoleon...

Hstorian Patrice Gueniffey and influential columnist Romain Marsily.  The former thought the movie was a big disappointment.  He took issues with the confused ages of the protagonists  and the invented scene where Napoleon retrieves a bullet from a wounded horse; also the bombing of the pyramids.

The journalist and producer Romain Marsily disliked the "lackluster" portrayal of the great man. There is no attempt to show his positive impact on French society through the creation of the Napoleonic code. "This film is like spitting in the face of the French people because it feels like Ridley Scott ridiculed both Napoleon and the history of France".

French commentators have also criticised the film for its pro-British view of history and failure to address Napoleon's reinstated slavery in the West indies.
