What is the obsession with 18th-century chairs?? A Louis XVI period gilded wood chair, stamped by Georges Jacob, from Marie Antoinette’s boudoir in Versailles has just achieved a new record price at auction of S$2.8 million [2.6 million]. Hope the new owner sits on its cautiously....
The sale, on 13th December, was the first in a series of four auctions being held by Sotheby's, which feature the collection of the late Hubert Guerrand-Hermès, the heir to the Hermes empire. Apparently the chair excited a "flurry of bidding". This first sale, which also included six Georges Jacob chairs made for Bagatelle, realised €23 in all.
Subsequent auctions will focus particularly on items relating to Marie-Caroline de Bourbon, Duchesse de Berry (1798-1860), who was a passionate interest of the collector.
