Marie-Antoinette's chocolate money

The website of design magazine Wallpaper features an article on the famous Paris chocolatier Debauve et Gallais, which was founded by Sulpice Debauve, pharmacist to the court of Louis XVI.

Debauve's signature chocolate ‘pistoles’ (named after the gold coins) were developed as a way of making bitter medicines more palatable for Marie-Antoinette.

The firm still takes full advantage of this heritage as a marketing concept:

"Les pistoles de Marie Antoinette" retail at 25€ – 58€; let's hope there aren't too many chocolate-lovers with a state to bankrupt!
