Louis-Sébastien Mercier (upcoming book)

Bucknell University Press announces Michael J. Mulryan's upcoming book, Louis Sébastien Mercier: Revolution and reform in eighteenth-century Paris. Expected publication September 15, 2023.

"French playwright, novelist, activist, and journalist Louis S
ébastien Mercier (1740-1814) passionately captured scenes of social injustice in pre-Revolutionary Paris in his prolific oeuvre, but today remains an understudied writer. In this penetrating study—the first in English devoted to Mercier in decades—Michael Mulryan explores his unpublished writings and urban chronicles, Tableau de Paris (1781-88) and Le Nouveau Paris (1798), in which he identified the city as a microcosm of national societal problems, detailed the conditions of the labouring poor, encouraged educational reform, and confronted universal social ills."

"Michael Mulryan is an associate professor of French at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia. He has published widely on eighteenth-century prison literature and the works of Louis Sébastien Mercier (1740-1814). He recently published a bilingual edition: Comment fonder la morale du peuple : Traité d’éducation pour l’avènement d’une société nouvelle by Louis Sébastien Mercier, a book he co-edited and co-translated with Geneviève Boucher of the University of Ottawa (Modern Humanities Research Association, 2020) He is also the co-editor of and a contributor to Eighteenth-Century Escape Tales: Between Fact and Fiction."
