A newly published book by Marion Pouffary, Robespierre, monstre ou héros? adds to the growing literature on the posthumous reputation of Robespierre.
The "black legend" of Robespierre, as it took shape in the first half of the 19th century, had four distinct strands - conservative, liberal, communist and anarchist. In addition a "golden legend" was formed by militant Republicans and socialists in the 1830s.
